Connecticut, Halloween 1978

I was 11 years old and it was the first time my friends and I were allowed to trick or treat without adults present. My 3 friends and I passed by 2 older kids, around 16, sitting on a stone wall. They started engaging us in conversation and asked us if we were getting lots of candy. I was the only one who answered. I told them it was going great and yes we had gotten a lot of candy. We went about our way and went to a few houses that were down a little dimly lit dead end road with about 4 houses on it. When we were exiting the dead end road we were jumped by the 2 bigger kid. 1 friend was a fast runner and got away. One friend received a bloody nose and the 3rd friend got a shiner. I was just kicked in my shin by one of the thugs wearing cowboy boots. We ran into a nearby bar where one of my friend’s mother worked. My 3 friends had their candy stolen but I never let go of mine.  The next at school all the kids heard that we were attacked and lost our candy. Many of the kids gave us some of their candy. I never let them know I actually still had my candy.
